Meet David Thomas

We have introduced you to our newest Board members but now we would like you to know about all our other board members. Meet David Thomas.

David Thomas just stepped down as President of the Rubicon Trail Foundation and now serves as a Director.  We would like to thank David for his contributions and work on behalf of the Rubicon Trail Foundation.

David was born and raised in Placerville, grew up with a love for the outdoors and a stepfather (Gary Bjork) that was active with the El Dorado Jeepherders and then in the Toys on the Rocks Off Road Club. David first ran the Rubicon Trail in 1980 and has not missed but a year or two since that he can remember. Active member in the Toys on the Rocks club and the Hangtown Crawlers also enjoys being a Jamboree Cook Crew volunteer. One of his other hobbies is pit crew for KOH and Baja teams. David and his wife Terri own and operate the Placerville Pizza Factory, his son and daughter are also trail users and love the Sierra Nevada’s.

Trail rig is a 1972 Land Cruiser FJ40 aka Nightlite and 2001 Jeep TJ.
David served as President from 2019 to 2021.

This meeting is usually a quicker meeting with board elections and passing of any electronic votes.

Press Release: Toilet Pumping on the Rubicon

The Rubicon Trail Foundation (RTF) was asked by Vickie Sanders, Parks Manager for El Dorado County if we would be interested in an as needed contract for pumping the restrooms on the Rubicon.

The RTF Board met to discuss the “as needed” contract and our consensus was, we don’t have the manpower this year to operate the Unimog on the trail. It was our understanding the county poo truck would be ready to go this season, so we focused our energies on other trail activities. 

As a possible solution, RTF has offered to train a county employee on the operation of the RTF Unimog.  We have also offered to lease the Unimog to the County for $1 for the season.

The RTF board understands the necessity of pumping and cleaning the toilets on the trail and we are open to any suggestions to make sure it gets done properly and in a timely manner. 

The Rubicon Trail Foundation is federally recognized, non-profit organization dedicated to the future health of the Rubicon Trail.  The Rubicon Trail Foundation acts as the support for Rubicon work projects, Friends of the Rubicon, and as a liaison with local government organizations. This support can range from getting approval for projects from the appropriate agencies, to feeding the volunteers, to buying the supplies needed to maintain the trail. We also fight the efforts of others to close or restrict use of the Rubicon Trail System.  All funds raised help to enhance the future health of the Rubicon Trail, while ensuring responsible motorized year-round access.

15th Annual Cantina For The Con Postponed

15th Annual Cantina For The Con Postponed

It is with heavy hearts we announce that the 15th Annual Cantina For The Con will be postponed until 2020.

After meeting with the Forest Service and addressing their concerns with the construction closure of North Shore campground and the dispersed camping area adjacent to it, RTF has determined that the severely limited parking, camping sites and turn around points near the construction area would greatly affect traffic flowing in and out of our event. The Rubicon Trail and its user’s safety will always be a top priority for the Rubicon Trail Foundation and we feel this year’s event will only add to a difficult situation. We also hope this will free up some much needed space to help offset these closures on one of the trails busiest weekends.

We greatly apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you. We know a lot of people look forward to this event each year and we look forward to seeing all of you as well!

Vicki Sanders Resignation

For immediate release: July 23, 2019

It is with great reluctance that we announce the acceptance of Vickie Sanders’ resignation from the Rubicon Trail Foundation Board of Directors.

Vickie Sanders, the El Dorado County representative has served on the Rubicon Trail Foundation Board for the last 5 years as a non-voting member and has chosen to resign her board position effective July 17, 2019.
Vickie will continue to be a liaison to the Rubicon Trail Foundation and we look forward to continuing a close working relationship with El Dorado County. We have two upcoming trips planned with the County: the VIP and OHMVR trip which are in the planning phase and will move forward as scheduled.

Vickie will be missed by the board, she has served with passion and strength. She truly is a trail user, advocate and has brought about many positive changes to the trail and community.
